Here are a few things that you can do to help keep you and your family symptom-free during Cold and Flu Season:
1. Wash your hands, and make sure your kids wash their hands, too.
Whenever you come home, whether it is from school or work or from shopping, or dinner with friends, wash your hands. Practicing this simple act, can make a huge difference. I know, you have heard this before right? But do you do it? Make it a habit. Start now!
2.Practice nasal irrigation.
Say what?! Yes clean out your nasal passages regularly. This will eliminate airborne virus, bacteria and allergens that may have been inhaled through your nose. You can use a neti pot* (pictured above) or a store-bought saline solution such as HydraSense, which is available at most pharmacies. *Note: a neti pot is not inteneded for use by children.
3. Reduce or eliminate the consumption of sugary and processed foods.
Sugar is what viruses and bacteria feed on, and an excess of sugar temporarily shuts down our immune sytem, letting those unfriendly invaders free reign to multipy exponentially.
4. Get plenty of rest and manage your stress.
Stress also lowers our immunity, so whether that is lack of sleep, eating poory or simply burning the candle at both ends, you run the risk of viruses and bacteria getting in and reaking havoc. So get to bed early, do one less thing and eat your veggies!
5. Drink lots of water.
Keeping the body hydrated will increase your energy and boost your metabolism allowing your body to naturally fend off and flush out viruses and bacteria. Drink half your body weight in ounces, and if you are active or sick you will need more.
6. Get outside and move.
Fresh air (oxygen!) sunshine (vitamin D!) and moderate exercise (moves your lymph!) help to keep you healthy and disease-free.
