Here are a few tips to carry you through this hectic but wonderful holiday season.
1. Relax, it will be over before you know it!
But, seriously, though, relax. Most of our stress is self-induced. Take it back a notch, say no to that extra thing that you have been asked to do or you are pushing yourself to do. It’s okay if it’s not perfect, really it is.
2. Shop locally!
Support the little guy and your community by buying from local shops. From book stores to spas to local artisans and more… your community has it all. Speaking of the little guy, check out what your local nutritionist has in the Feeding the Whole Family store this year >> click here for my Holiday Gift Ideas 2013.pdf.
3. Stay out of the germ-infested malls!
If you do most of your shopping locally you won’t need to indulge in the crazed mall scene. Not only is it germ-infested, it is a total greed-fest too. Bad for your health, your soul and your pocket-book.
4. Give yourself permission to indulge!
Well, you are going to anyway so why not give your body the message that it is okay. The guilt associated with poor food choices does your body more harm than that piece of cake you are eating. No guilt = less stress = better digestion and assimilation too. Bless it, eat it mindfully and slowly, and your body will thank you.
5. Always bring food to your gatherings!
If you are concerned that you will make poor choices, it is always a good idea to bring along a favourite dish that you know will satisfy you. Some ideas: main dish salad meal, bean dips, healthy dessert.
6. Get outside for goodness sakes!
Fresh air, sunshine and moderate exercise help to keep you healthy and sane. There is nothing better for your soul than a quiet walk in the snowy sunshine. Just do it!
7. Catch up on some well-deserved rest!
Lack of sleep is another stressor for the body and is a major contributor to weight gain, especially around the middle. Instead, give yourself permission to curl up in front of the fire with that book that you have been meaning to read, or take a nap, or a long bath. You deserve it!
